The 3 Rules Of Good Logo Design

What do you think makes a good logo? Is it the complexity of the logo? Its uniqueness? What is it that makes a logo “Good” and make it stand out from the other logos? In the following video by The Futur Academy, renowned graphic designer Sagi Habib who is a partner at Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv design firm and has done logos for some of the world’s most iconic and enduring brands like NBC, National Geographic, Mobil, U.S. Open, and many many more answers this important question. He gives us his 3 rules of good logo design and what makes a good logo.

Here’s 3 rules of good logo design by Sagi Haviv:

  1. Appropriate – logos should be appropriate in it’s feeling.
  2. Distinctive & Memorable – It has to be unusual enough to persist in our mind. It should pass the “doodle test.”
  3. Simple – It needs to be able to be produced in every pixel size.

Something that looks generic is a bad logo. But on the other hand, something that is too complicated is also a bad logo as it’ll fall apart in small sizes and pixel format. The magic finding the balance between something simple and something distinctive. When you strike the balance of these 3 things, you have a good logo.
