List Of Things You Can Do To Get Out Of Design Block

This is a list of things you can do to get out of your design block:

  1. Walk away from the computer and draw.
  2. List everything that comes to your mind.
  3. Visit a creative showcase, “art, theatre”.
  4. Take a break.
  5. Do something completely out of your comfort zone.
  6. Change the surroundings.
  7. Browse portfolios.
  8. Work out / Stay active.
  9. Spend time with others.
  10. Spend time on your hobbies.
  11. Take time to recharge.

1. Walk away from the computer and draw

Feeling drained out and out of ideas? Take some rest, walk away from your computer and draw something. Doesn’t matter what you draw. Draw anything that comes to your mind. This will help you clear your mind and gain a little bit of clarity.

Moreover, drawing can help you develop some new ideas. Let the pencil flow, and draw what you want to.

2. List everything that comes to your mind.

Many things go through our minds every single day. As a result, sometimes our mind gets too cluttered that we can’t focus on one thing.

The best thing we can do in this situation is to layout whatever is going through our mind at the moment on a piece of paper. Even just writing what’s going through our minds can help us remove some burden from our heads.

But, we can go even further and create a plan and strategy to tackle each thing that is distracting us and maybe, causing the design block or at least contributing to it.

3. Visit a creative showcase, “art, theatre”

In art school, I’ve been told several times to look for inspiration in different mediums like movies, paintings, or even just our natural surroundings.

A creative showcase is a great way to get out of our design block as we don’t know what might inspire us. So, go out in creative showcases like art galleries, or theatre, who knows, maybe you get your next big idea there.

4. Take a break.

As a designer, we sometimes try to do too many things. Yes, there’s a lot to do a designer, make your portfolio, create a following, work on client’s projects, work on personal projects, etc. In between all this, we overestimate our capacity and end up exhausting ourselves.

This should not happen. When you’re experiencing a design block, don’t force yourself. Take a break, it will freshen you up and you will get back in a much better and healthier space.

5. Do something completely out of your comfort zone

The Comfort zone is a killer, and I mean that in a negative way. The more you try to push yourself out of your comfort zone, the better you’d feel.

Try to do something that you know is good for you and which is out of your comfort zone. Maybe you’ve been putting off going to the gym because of a certain reason, then go to the gym. Maybe you don’t like running, but you know it’s good for you, so try running. Moreover, it doesn’t need to be physical activity, maybe your files are not organized and you waste a lot of time when you try to find a file. Then try organizing your files in a proper way.

Trying to do things ut of your comfort zone can not only help to get out of a design block but even better your life.

Check out the video below, it explains how getting out of your comfort zone can turn your life around:

6. Change the surroundings

I’ve done this a lot of times and it really helps. Has this ever happened to you that you’re just not feeling to work? And then you see around you and don’t like how some things are placed and then you adjust them or move them and then when you sit, you somehow want to work? It has happened to me a lot.

Maybe because I am not very good at organizing stuff regularly. But, even if you do organize and keep your surroundings clean, you got to keep changing it from time to time.

Some might say the contrary, to work in the same space every day, but I feel that there sometimes needs to be a change. Try it and you’ll be surprised.

7. Browse Portfolios

We all do this right? I know I do and I’m sure most of you out there check other designer’s portfolio’s as well. Especially when you’re going through a design block, checking other designer’s hard work is inspiring.

You never know which design work inspires you for your next project and motivate you to start. So, browse portfolios, and it might just get you out of your design block.

8. Work out / Stay active

We know it’s good for us but still many of us skip our workout. There can be a number of reasons to skip work out. Maybe you are under a lot of work pressure, maybe you’re just tired, or maybe you just don’t have any time.

But most of us can actually manage to get an hour for ourselves, but still, we don’t, we lie to ourselves, that includes me as well. Even if you can’t go to the gym, try to be active. Don’t simply sit for work for hours and hours. Take short breaks, stretch your body, and maybe try to work out 5 minutes within each break. This won’t give you a Dwayne Johnson body but will keep you active.

Especially when you’re going through a design block. It is a great excuse to hit the gym. As you know, starting is the toughest part. Just get to the gym, and start working out, and I’m sure, it will at least help you feel good if not get you out of your design block.

9. Spend time with others

It is common in the creative or design field to get into a project and just forget everything. Maybe because we are so passionate about it, or maybe we just want to produce the best possible result.

In the process, we miss socializing with others. We sometimes even forget our friends when we get too deep in our work.

Instead, we should find time to socialize and spend time with others instead of just being by ourselves all the time. This helps our mind open up, and you’ll notice that when you are spending time with your loved ones, you lose a lot of your stress and anxiety.

10. Spend time on your hobbies.

What’s your hobby? Have you not practiced it for some time? Now is the time to practice it. And since practicing your hobby feels good and makes you happy, it might just get you out of your design block.

11. Take time to recharge.

And last but not least, take time to recharge. It is okay to take some time off. Don’t be too harsh on yourself and relax. Believe in yourself that you’ll get back soon and better than before.
